What is Umrah?

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Unlike Hajj, Umrah can be performed at any time of the year and is considered a highly recommended Sunnah. It involves entering Ihram, performing Tawaf around the Kaaba, and completing Sa'i between Safa and Marwa.

Steps of Umrah

  • Step 1

    Enter Ihram: Put on the Ihram garments at the Miqat (designated boundary) and make the intention (Niyyah) for Umrah.

  • Step 2

    Tawaf: Circumambulate the Holy Kaaba seven times in an anticlockwise direction, starting from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).

  • Step 3

    Pray at Maqam Ibrahim: Offer two rakats of prayer at or near Maqam Ibrahim after Tawaf.

  • Step 4

    Sa'i: Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating Hajar's (AS) search for water.

  • Step 5

    Halq or Taqsir: Men shave or shorten their hair; women cut a small portion. This completes the Umrah
